Objective:

The students will do an experiment using different temperatures and how long it would take for things to cook.

Materials:

-Four toaster ovens

          -16 3x5 metal pans

          -4 different Duncan Hines mixes

          -Pencil and paper

          -Science notebook

          -Oven mitts

Lesson:

Introduction:    The teacher will draw three columns on the blackboard.  The first column will say, what you know about temperature and cooking.  The second column will say, what you want to know about temperature and cooking.  The third column will be filled in when they finished the experiment.  The heading will say what they found out about temperature and cooking.  The teacher will ask for responses and he/she will record their responses in the appropriate columns on the blackboard. Once the first two columns are filled in then the experiment will begin.

Lesson:  When the Jews left Egypt they did not have time to let their yeast rise.  They were only able to cook their ‘bread’ for 18 minutes.  In 18 minutes the yeast could not rise and therefore they ate what they made which was called matzah.  The experiment, which the class will do, will test different temperatures and how fast certain foods cook.

Students first will predict how long it would take to cook the same size cake at different temperatures.  The students will be split up into groups of four.  Each group will be given 4 different types of cake mixes to be cooked.  They will make their predictions and then place them in a toaster oven and see if their predictions are correct.  The students will compare the results.  The group will then create a graph showing the temperatures and amount of time it took to cook the foods.

Closing Activity: The students will fill in the third column on what they learned about the experiment.  The groups will also present their graphs which they made.  They will explain which mix cooked faster.  Which took the longest to bake.

*CAUTION: The teacher should make sure the student are very careful when they use the toaster oven.  They should only use oven mitts to take hot items from the oven.
